ESPAÑOL ABAJO:

With hearts full of gratitude and hope, we share the historic news that the Church has a new Holy Father.

From the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti proclaimed:

“I announce to you a great joy; we have a Pope:The Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord,Lord Robert FrancisCardinal of the Holy Roman Church Prevost, who has taken the name Leo XIV.”

In a moment of joy and historic significance, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago was introduced as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first pope from the United States and the first member of the Augustinian order to be elected pope. Appearing on the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica on May 8 — the feast of Our Lady of Pompeii — he greeted a jubilant crowd with words of peace and hope, invoking the witness of Pope Francis and the wisdom of St. Augustine: “For you I am a bishop; but with you I am a Christian.” A former missionary in Peru, he delighted the faithful by addressing his former diocese in Spanish before leading the Hail Mary and giving the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing. Pope Leo XIV  now begins his ministry as the 267th Successor of St. Peter. We unite in prayer with Catholics around the world, asking the Lord to bless our new pope with wisdom, courage, and the heart of a true shepherd.

Let us rejoice in this moment of grace for the Church.

Habemus Papam! Thanks be to God!

¡Habemus Papam! ¡Gracias a Dios!
